The collection guide

Choosing a medieval hood

Start with the shape

A shorter, plain hood keeps the focus on the rest of your outfit. A liripipe adds a long tail, while a dagged edge gives the shoulder cape a cut decorative outline. These details can overlap, so compare the actual design rather than relying on its name alone.

Check the fit and the fabric

Look at the face opening, neck opening and shoulder depth. If a hood pulls over the head, check that opening as well as the finished fit. Fabric composition, lining and thickness affect how it feels against your skin and how much warmth it adds.

Make the layers work together

Try the hood with the collar and neckline you plan to wear beneath it. For outdoor events, compare the coverage with our medieval cloaks. For strict reenactment, check the specific design against your group's period and clothing requirements.

Medieval Hoods: common questions

What is the difference between a peasant hood and a liripipe hood?

Peasant hood describes a simple, understated style. Liripipe describes the tail extending from the back of a hood. One garment can have both features; the photographs and measurements show the actual shape.

Are medieval hoods for men or women?

Choose by the garment's measurements and shape. A hood does not need a separate men's or women's product page when the construction and fit are the same.

Does one size mean every hood fits everyone?

No. Compare the opening and shoulder coverage with your own measurements. Allow room for hair, a cap and any layers you intend to wear underneath.
